Turkey is a transcontinental country located primarily in Western Asia, with portions extending into Southeastern Europe. Officially the Republic of Turkey, it spans parts of both continents and borders eight countries: Greece, Bulgaria, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. Ankara is its capital city; Istanbul, straddling both Europe and Asia, is the country's most populous city.
