Gilbert Islands

Island group forming part of the Republic of Kiribati.

The Gilbert Islands are a chain of 16 atolls and islands located in the central Pacific Ocean, forming part of the Republic of Kiribati. Historically significant as one of the first island groups settled by Micronesian peoples, they are known for their coral atolls and lagoons. The islands were named after British explorer Thomas Gilbert, who first sighted them in 1788.
