The Ottomans were a powerful empire that originated in northwestern Anatolia in the late 13th century and expanded over centuries to become one of the most influential Islamic empires in history. At its height, it spanned three continents—Europe, Asia, and Africa—and controlled vast territories stretching from the Arabian Peninsula to Hungary. The empire was founded by Osman I and ruled by a series of sultans until its dissolution following World War I.
