The Byzantine Empire, also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, was the continuation of the Roman Empire in its eastern provinces during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Centered at Constantinople (modern Istanbul), it thrived from the 4th century CE until its fall to the Ottoman Turks in 1453, preserving Roman traditions and Greek culture while developing a unique identity.
