Wind shear is a significant change in wind speed and/or direction over a relatively short distance. It can occur horizontally (change across geographic area) or vertically (change with altitude). Severe vertical wind shear is particularly dangerous for aviation, as it can create instability in the atmospheric flow and lead to turbulence.
