Novgorod (also known as Veliky Novgorod) is a historic Russian city located in northwestern Russia, near Lake Ilmen. It was a major trading center and one of the most important cities in Kievan Rus', known for its republican government and relative independence from Moscow during the 13th-15th centuries.
