Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1861, until his assassination on April 15, 1865. He led the Union through the American Civil War, preserved the nation's unity, signed the Emancipation Proclamation which marked a turning point toward abolishing slavery, and laid groundwork for economic modernization.
