The Punic Wars

A series of three conflicts between Rome and Carthage (a powerful North African city-state), fought from 264 to 146 BC. Driven by competition for control of the Mediterranean Sea, the wars included Hannibal's famous invasion of Italy during the Second Punic War and ultimately resulted in Roman victory and the destruction of Carthaginian power.
