The Falklands War
Falklands Conflict
Falkland Islands War
A ten-week conflict in 1982 between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the South Sandwich Islands. Argentina initiated the war by invading the islands, which they claimed as part of their territory (Islas Malvinas). The British responded with a naval task force that retook the islands, resulting in significant casualties on both sides. The war solidified Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's position and had lasting geopolitical consequences.
