Makemake is a dwarf planet located in the Kuiper belt, beyond Neptune's orbit. It was discovered in 2005 and is one of the largest known trans-Neptunian objects. Named after the creator god in Rapa Nui mythology, Makemake has a reddish coloration and is composed primarily of methane ice.
