Originally built as a fortress in the late 12th century, it was transformed into a royal palace and later became a public museum during the French Revolution. The Louvre houses an extensive collection of art and artifacts spanning thousands of years, including iconic works such as the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci and the Winged Victory of Samothrace.
