Latin
Latin is a classical language originally spoken in the region around Rome, known as Latium. It was the lingua franca of ancient Rome and remained influential throughout Europe during the Middle Ages as the language of scholarship, religion, and law. Latin is the ancestor of the Romance languages such as French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian.
