Charles the Great

Charlemagne (c. 742 – 814), also known as Charles the Great, was King of the Franks and Holy Roman Emperor. He united much of Europe under his rule during the early Middle Ages, expanding the Frankish kingdom significantly through military campaigns. A patron of learning and arts, he is credited with initiating the Carolingian Renaissance, a period of cultural revival.
