Assyrian
An ancient Semitic people who originated in Upper Mesopotamia (modern-day northern Iraq). Known for their powerful military, sophisticated administration, and impressive art and architecture, the Assyrian Empire dominated Mesopotamia from the 25th to 8th centuries BCE. Their language, Neo-Assyrian, belongs to the Akkadian branch of the Semitic languages. Modern Assyrians are a diaspora community who maintain their distinct language, culture and Christian faith.
